Interdiction of Square | 1999 3/10

B/W photograph, 47 cm x 40 cm, 1999

Photograph of the pictogram placed at the entrance of highway tunnels. This actual sign prohibits access to vehicles carrying dangerous substances.
Intrigued this road sign forbidding access to vehicles transporting hazardous materials, I returned to Black Square in order to proof it in the normative context of the road system. If the square can embody order or the norm, its destabilization (represented by the twisted black square) presents a danger. The project consisted in placing a cube on the roof of a car in order to transgress the Square’s order. A video camera on the left-hand side of the car transmitted onto a screen placed on the windshield, the image of the line painted down the centre of the road. This system enabled the driver to follow the line and reach his destination, in to the gallery where the danger was represented.
